Sorrento’s historical centre

An itinerary of architecture, history arts and crafts

AN INTERSECTION OF SUGGESTIONS

The historical town of Sorrento is full of small intersecting alleyways enclosed within the remains of the ancient Greek, Roman, medieval and then renaissance walls.

The Alleys: Via Pietà, Via San Cesareo, Via Padre Reginaldo Giuliani and Via Tasso, outline the historical centre, within which, behind the Tasso square, is our Hotel del Corso.

SORRENTO AND THE SORRENTO COAST

Sorrento is the most important and central town of the Sorrento Coast, the coastal area overlooking the Gulf of Naples spanning from Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi on the east to Castellammare di Stabia on the north-west.

Thanks to its dry and mild climate, the Sorrento Peninsular is great to visit all year round, travelling through the towns of Meta, Piano di Sorrento, Sant’Agnello, Sorrento and lastly Massa Lubrense, the farthest point of the peninsular facing the Isle of Capri.
Natural beauty, breath-taking views, gastronomical excellencies and an established tourism system are what make Sorrento and its surroundings famous worldwide.

WHAT TO VISIT IN THE HISTORICAL CENTRE

Hotel del Corso - duomo Sorrento

Sorrento is an international town with a lovely historical centre, marinas and lemon and orange groves.

The rich architectural heritage makes the historical centre a must see, with its mansions and historic homes, its antient aristocratic seats and numerous churches.
Among the churches (Chiesa) you must see are the Chiesa dei Servi di Maria, the Cathedral and its steeple, the Chiesa del Carmine, The S.Antonino Basilica, the Chiesa delle Grazie, the church and cloisters of S.Francesco, the Chiesa del Rosario and the Chiesa della SS. Annunziata.

Palazzo Veniero, Palazzo Correale, the Casa Quattrocentesca, and the portion of Torquato Tasso’s house at the entrance of the Hotel Tramontano and the house of Cornelia Tasso are instead the residences you should visit.

The architectural tour should also include the Porta and Dominova aristocratic seats. The latter being the only testimony of its fifteenth century kind left in the Campania region.

After having dedicated part of the tour to architecture the remainder of it will be pleasant strolls through Sorrento’s historical alleys filled with shops and typical Sorrento artisanship workshops, where one can admire the inlaid woodwork furniture or where to learn and taste our local produce such as our typical Lemon liquor, the Limoncello of Sorrento.

Nature, History, culture, gastronomy and a warm welcome await you at the Hotel del Corso in the historical centre of Sorrento for an awesome stay.
